At Risk Jobs

Bloodborne pathogens are a threat anyone exposed to blood or body fluids might face.  There is reasonably anticipated contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials that may result from the performance of an employee's duties.  
The blood or infectious materials can enter a body through the

  • non-intact skin
  • eyes
  • mucous membranes
  • parenterally (piercing mucous membranes or the skin barrier through such events as needlesticks, human bites, cuts and abrasions)

STAFF AT RISK FOR OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE - CATEGORY I

Staff at risk perform may perform some or all of these tasks:

  • First aid for injuries
  • Diapering/toileting
  • Tooth brushing
  • Feeding (oral and gastrostomy)
  • Emesis cleanup
  • Change ostomy bags
  • Involved in biting incidents
  • Clean mouth/nose secretions
  • Suctioning
  • Catheterization
  • General health care
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Clean up body fluid spills
  • Dispose of regulated waste and laundry
  • General facility cleaning
  • Clean broken glassware
  • Give injections

This group includes:   Bus Drivers, Coaches, Cooks, School Nurses, Health Aides, Nurse Practitioner, Groundskeepers,  Maintenance, Physical Education Teachers, High School Art Teacher, Technology Education Teachers, Art-High School, Special Education Teachers in Functional Life Skills Program, Behavioral, ACE, TAP, and the Center Programs and Special Education Technicians in Functional Life Skills Program, Behavioral, ACE, TAP, and the Center Programs

Hepatitis B shots will be offered to this group upon hire.

STAFF WHO MAY BE AT RISK FOR OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE - CATEGORY II

This group includes: Bus Aides, Assistant Principals, Principals, Special Education Coordinators, All K - 5 Secretaries, Custodians, Middle School - 1 Secretary Designee, High School Student Assistance Office Secretary

Hepatitis B shots will be offered to this group upon hire.

All employees must be very vigilant about practicing standard precautions.  Staff are trained in ways to reduce their risk of occupational exposure.
